Grammar 2
Grammar 2 continues to develop classroom etiquette and respect of tutors and peers while building foundation skills in Grammar and Composition. Developing and encouraging a love of learning while guiding students through engaging material, ample opportunity is provided for delightful classroom interactions and academic growth.

Composition:
Students are introduced to the joy of writing first by making creative use of the parts of speech they are learning in Grammar and then by composing sentences and paragraphs about topics of high interest to the second grader. The emphasis is on building our "writing muscles" through putting pencil to paper in many engaging ways.
Grammar:
Grammar is taught in the classroom at this level. An interactive classroom atmosphere utilizes the jingles and sentences labeling techniques taught in Shurley English Level 2 while promoting competitive accountablity amid lots of fun as the foundation for composition, grammar and Latin is laid for the coming years.
History:
Using Veritas Press Old Testament & Ancient Egypt history cards, students journey the very beginning of all human hisotry at Creation through the primal events of the Fall, and the flood, to the emergence of the civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt, while tracing the history of God's chosen nation of Israel. Students gain greater familiarity with many biblical events and see how they fit into the larger picture of human history. Students learn through singing, reading, writing, games, drama, and creating 'timeline projects' that correclate to each historical event they study. Their history studies come alive through special craft days, feast days, and the occasional field trip.
Science:
"It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an insect!" Using Apologia's Young Explorer Series Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day, students discover the similarities and differences among the insect species as well as those of the feathered fowl. By capitalizing on their natural curiosity, students' observation skills are developed through activities such as collecting insects, watching birds, and nature journaling. Activities foster a greater understanding of the structure of these amazing airbone creatures as well as their habitats and characteristics.
Grammar 3
Grammar 3 encouages students to reach new heights as they begin their study of Latin, discover the piviotal point of history when Jesus Christ entered the world, continue flexing their 'writing muscles' as they advance in their composition skills, and explore the world of plants all while growing in their relationships with tutors and classmates.

Composition:
Building on the foundation begun in Grammar 2, students add to their repertoire of stylistic techniques. Using material drawn from science and history, as well as Institute for Excellence in Writing, students progress from writing simple sentences to paragraphs constantly reinforcing earlier concepts which solidifes their ability to express themselves.

Grammar:
Shurley English Level 3 develops a clear understanding of grammar & sentence construction. Beginning in Grammar 3, students work on grammar at home using weekly lesson plans provided by ACTS. Classroom activities help introduce grammar concepts while encouraging reinforcement of previous ones and keeping up with home lessons. Students sing and recite jingles, work through the Question and Answer flow of sentences while cementing their understanding of basic grammar.
History:
The foundation for this class is Veritas Press New Testament, Greece and Rome history cards. Adding to their framework begun with Mesopotamia and Egypt the year before, students now study the Greeks & Romans and discover how Biblical history fits into this timeline. In class students participate in activities that make history come alive. These include crafts, dress-up days, a Greek feast, the Olympic Games and more. Through these activites and at home readings, students learn how these ancient cultures have affected our lives today.

Latin:
Utilizing Latin for Children Primer A, this course is designed to incrementally introduce third grade students to Latin. During class time, students learn basic Latin grammar and vocabulary by singing, chanting, playing word games and developing basic translation techniques. English grammar concepts are reinformced when the corresponding Latin grammar concept is introduced. Students delight in connecting the Latin of the past to the English of today as they discover derivatives we use daily. This course lays the foundation for future Latin studies and gives students confidence to advance theri understanding of a new (old) language.
